October 6, 2016 – Spencertown, NY
Taconic Sculpture Park is located just minutes from the Taconic State Parkway in Columbia County, NY. After spending a couple of days in the Albany area to do some hiking in Thacher State Park, I wanted to see if there were any areas of interest on my way back to Westchester County. What a find this place turned out to be. Artist Roy Kanwit has transformed his property into an outdoor art gallery.
Nestled in the hills overlooking the Taconic State Parkway is a unique place in a tranquil setting. I am not an art buff, but I can appreciate the effort and care that it took to make this a special place.
Upon entering the property you are greeted by a very distinctive looking building.
Just up the hill to the left is a giant head laying on it’s side.
It was quite enjoyable having the place to ourselves. We walked around just snapping away at all the sculptures on display.
Another giant head on display.
My personal favorite was this dragon.
I walked up the hill on a mowed path and I was greeted by another giant head, only this one is 20 feet tall and can be seen from the Taconic while traveling north.
This place has quite a view as well.
The sculptures were many, so below are just a few more of the striking works of art on Mr. Kanwit’s property.
His home sat overlooking the property and his art. It is made of stone and is rather stunning.
His patio was impressive and those arches rock.
Also on the property is a trail that possibly loops around. If not for the 7.5 mile hike the previous day, I may have checked it out. Instead I soaked in some culture and enjoyed an artist’s hard work. Thank you Mr. Roy Kanwit for providing this exceptional setting to enjoy your works of art.
Some very fine and unique photos. Thank you! Roy Kanwit. Taconic Sculpture
